Michael Somare

Michael Somare is the first Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. He recently passed away at the age of 84 due to pancreatic cancer. Somare is known as the “father of nation” for his role in the independence of the Pacific archipelago from Australia. He served as Prime Minister four times since the 1975 independence. Before independence, he was the Chief Minister of Australian-administered territory of Papua New Guinea.
