MHA Declares Hizb-ut-Tahrir Terrorist Organization in India

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently declared Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) a terrorist organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). This decision is a major step in India’s efforts to combat radicalism and terrorism.

Why was Hizb-ut-Tahrir Declared a Terrorist Group?

The MHA explained that Hizb-ut-Tahrir is involved in terrorist activities, including radicalizing young people to join extremist groups and raising money for terrorism. The group is considered a serious threat to India’s national security and its sovereignty as a nation.

What are Hizb-ut-Tahrir’s Goals?

Hizb-ut-Tahrir seeks to establish a global Islamic state, or Caliphate, by overthrowing democratically elected governments through jihad. These objectives conflict with India’s democratic system and threaten the country’s internal stability and security.

How does Hizb-ut-Tahrir Operate?

The organization is known for radicalizing young people and encouraging them to support terrorism. They use social media and encrypted messaging apps to spread their ideology. They also organize Dawah meetings (religious gatherings) to recruit and indoctrinate followers.

Recent Arrests

On October 9, 2024, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Faizul Rahman, the state ‘amir’ (leader) of Hizb-ut-Tahrir in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Rahman was involved in a conspiracy related to promoting disaffection and separatism, demonstrating India’s ongoing efforts to combat extremist threats.

By banning HuT, India has now outlawed 45 organizations under its anti-terrorism laws. This highlights the government’s commitment to tackling terrorism and ensuring the safety of the nation.

About Hizb-ut-Tahrir

Hizb-ut-Tahrir, founded in 1953 in Jerusalem, aims to establish a Caliphate through peaceful means. While it operates in over 40 countries, it is banned in many places, including Germany and Russia. The group promotes a strict interpretation of Islam and is criticized for its alleged ties to extremist groups, though it denies such connections. Its leadership is decentralized, meaning it relies on grassroots efforts to spread its ideology.
