MHA Clearance to Jet Airways

Recently, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted security clearance to the new Jet Airways promoters. The security clearance will pave the way for the relaunch of the Jet airways’ operations.

What is the story so far?

Once a pioneer in India’s private aviation industry, Jet airways’ operations was closed in 2019 due to financial constraints. Jet Airways, owned by Naresh Goyal, operated its last flight on April 17, 2019. In June 2019, insolvency proceedings were initiated for Jet Airways.

Who took over Jet Airways?

In October 2020, the Jet airways’ Committee of Creditors (CoC) approved the resolution plan of the consortium of the United Kingdom’s Kalrock Capital and the UAE-based entrepreneur Murari Lal Jalan. Thus, the Jalan-Kalrock Consortium is currently the promoter of Jet Airways.

Who approved the resolution plan and when?

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the resolution plan in June 2021.

What are the next steps to launch operations?

Last week, Jet Airways conducted its first test flight from Hyderabad to Delhi. After the test flight, Jet Airways has to conduct proving flights after which it will get an air operator certificate.

What are Proving flights?

Proving flights are similar to commercial flights, but with Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) officials and airline officials as passengers and cabin crew members on board.

Who will grant the air operator certificate?

The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will grant the air operator certificate to Jet Airways depending on the test flight results.

Last month, Jet Airways appointed Sanjiv Kapoor, former chief strategy and commercial officer at Vistara, as its CEO.
