The Meira Paibis, also known as the “women torch bearers” or “Mothers of Manipur,” hold great significance in the state of Manipur. They are regarded as a powerful moral force and serve as society’s conscience keepers. Their presence and importance in Manipuri civil society are permanent and palpable, and they play a crucial role in various social and political movements.
Fighting Alcoholism and Drug Abuse
In 1977, the Meira Paibis formed a major grassroots movement focused on fighting alcoholism and drug abuse in Manipur. This movement aimed to address the pressing social issues related to substance abuse and create awareness about the harmful effects of addiction.
Supporting Irom Sharmila’s Hunger Strike
Irom Sharmila, an activist, embarked on a remarkable hunger strike from 2000 to 2016 to protest against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). The Meira Paibis extended their support to Sharmila during her hunger strike, amplifying her cause and advocating for the repeal of the AFSPA, which grants immunity to armed forces in “disturbed” areas.
Demanding the Inner Line Permit System
In 2015, tensions arose in Manipur over the demand for the introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system. The Meira Paibis actively participated in the protests and advocated for the implementation of the ILP system. They emphasized the need to protect local interests, preserve the region’s culture, and ensure opportunities for the local population.
Role in Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency Bandh
During the tenure of the first BJP-led government in Manipur, the Meira Paibis played a significant role in a bandh called in the Thangmeiband Assembly constituency. They demanded the union of two lovers and protested against a politician who was accused of reneging on his promise to marry a woman. The Meira Paibis mobilized support and called for a bandh to address this issue.
Influencing the Release of KYKL Cadres
The Meira Paibis were reported to have influenced the release of KYKL cadres during an operation conducted by security forces. They confronted the security personnel, applying pressure for the men’s release. Their active involvement showcased their determination to protect the interests and rights of the people.
