Medical Council (Amendment) Bill 2019
The features of the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019 passed by the Lok Sabha are listed below:
- The bill amends the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 which provides for setting up the Medical Council of India (MCI) which regulates medical education and practice.
- The bill replaces the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2019.
- The bill provides for supersession of the MCI and empowers the central government to constitute a Board of Governors for exercising the powers of the MCI.
- The board of governors will comprise of 12 members.
The suppression of MCI is an interim arrangement to ensure there is no regulatory vacuum till the time period the government brings up the National Medical Commission Bill before the parliament to enhance the transparency, accountability and quality in the governance of medical education in the country.
