May 8-9: Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those who Lost their Lives during Second World War
Every year during May 8-9, the United Nations marks the Time of Remembrance and reconciliation for those who lost their lives during Second World War. This is being marked as the historic event paved way for the establishment of the United Nations. Also, the day pays tribute to all the victims of Second World War.
Highlights
The day was declared in 2004 as was commemorated by the United Nations since then. However, the UN urged the NGOs, its member countries and other organizations to join the commemoration of the day through a resolution that was passed in 2010.
VE Day and VJ Day
VE Day is called the Victory in Europe Day. The day is widely marked in Europe on May 8. This year the 75th anniversary is being commemorated to end hostilities in Europe. The day signifies the end combat operations in Germany, Greece, Scandinavia, Balkan states and Italy.
The date, however, is not the official end of second world war. This is because, Japan did not surrender till August 15, 1945.
The day Japan surrendered is marked as Victory in the Pacific Day. The day is also called the Victory over Japan Day or VJ Day.
