Matua Mahasangha
Matua Mahasangha is a religious reformation movement founded by Harichand Thakur in 1860 CE. Matua is a sect of Vaishnava Hinduism. The movement originated in Orakandi in Bangladesh. The sect’s members were people who were considered as untouchables called Namasudras. The followers believe in self-realisation or ‘swayam dikshiti’. Under this movement, Thakur is considered as one of the avatars of Vishnu or Krishna. The Indian PM is to visti Harichand Thakur’s shrine in Orakandi.
