Manufacture and Import of Polyester National Flags
The Indian government has allowed the import and manufacture of national flags which are machine-made of polyester. The 2002 Flag Code of India has been amended for this purpose.
Overview:
- Earlier rules permitted only those flags which were made by only “hand-spun and weaved wool, cotton, or silk khadi bunting while machine-made flag imports were banned in 2019.
- “The National Flag shall be made of hand-spun and hand-woven or machine-made, cotton, polyester, wool, silk khadi bunting” is what the latest revision acknowledged.
About Flag Code of India, 2002
Flag Code of India, 2002 came into force on January 26, 2002. India’s flag code was separated into three sections. Part 1 comprises general descriptions of the National Flag, while Part 2 deals with the display of the National Flag by private and public organisations, and Part 3 deals with the exhibition of the National Flag by the State and Central Governments and their agencies.
The flag code states that the shape of the National Flag must be rectangular. The ratio of the Flag’s length to its height (width) must be 3:2. Except on instances when the Flag is flown at half-mast on public buildings in accordance with Government directives, the Flag shall not be flown at half-mast. The flag will not be used as a drapery in any form, including private funerals, except for State funerals or funerals of the armed forces or other paramilitary forces. The Flag shall not be embroidered or printed on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, or any other dress material, nor shall it be used as a part of any costume or uniform of any kind.
