Manipur Sangai Festival 2019 being organised in Imphal
The 2019 edition of Manipur Sangai Festival is being organised from 24-30 November in Imphal. Every year in November, Gateway of North-East region, Manipur celebrates the ‘Sangai Festival’, which was named after the State animal, Sangai, the brow-antlered deer found only in Manipur.
About Manipur Sangai Festival
It is one of the largest Government-sponsored tourism fests. The Festival is all about unity in diversity and a true reflection of Manipur’s saga.
It exhibits the best of Manipur, in terms of: art and culture, cuisines and music, scenic beauty of the land, handloom and fine arts, indigenous sports, eco and adventure tourism activities such as trekking, white water rafting and parasailing etc. along with its indigenous martial arts- Thang Ta (a combination Spear & Sword skills), Yubi-Lakpi (a game played with greased coconut-like rugby), Mukna Kangjei (a game that combines hockey and wrestling), and Sagol Kangjei– Modern Polo (believed to have evolved in Manipur).
Participants: This year more than 50,000 attendees including national leaders, policy makers, industry experts, business delegates and exhibitors are expected to attend festival this year. Moreover 20 countries inlucding Bhutan, Egypt, South Korea, Haiti, Myanmar, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, U.A.E., Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Thailand, etc. are also expected to participate this year.
Background
Manipur Sangai Festival was started in year 2010. Since then it has grown over the years into a big platform for Manipur to showcase its rich tradition and culture to world. The festival is now labelled as the grandest festival of Manipur and helps to promote Manipur as a world-class tourism destination. The past editions of festival have been a huge success and brought a huge number of visitors from within and outside state. The Manipur Sangai Festival 2018 was organized at different locations in Imphal and Bishnupur District. This decision was made keeping in view, the increasing number of visitors to the state during festival.
