Manipur Record Maximum Cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2017

The Home Ministry, last week in Rajya Sabha provided the National Crime Record Data (NCRB) of cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2017. According to the data provided Manipur with 352 people arrested in 330 cases, have more than 35% cases of the total cases registered under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the country, followed by Jammu and Kashmir with 156 cases making 17% of the total number of cases in the country, Assam (133 cases), Uttar Pradesh (109 cases) and Bihar (52 cases).

A total of 1554 persons were arrested across the country in 2017 under the Act out of which Uttar Pradesh recorded the most number with 382 arrests, followed by Assam (374), Manipur (352), Jammu and Kashmir (35) and 57 in Jharkhand.

In August 2019, Parliament amended the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act to designate suspected individuals as terrorists. The Act was passed in 1967.
