‘Mani App’ for Visually Challenged launched by RBI

India’s central bank, Reserve Bank of India(RBI) has launched a mobile app named ‘MANI’ on Wednesday, 1st January 2019 that will help in identifying the denomination of currency notes for the visually challenged persons. MANI stands for Mobile Aided Note Identifier is available for download from Google Play Store and Apple app store- iOS operating systems.

Shaktikant Das, the Governor of RBI along with other senior RBI officials launched the mobile application and informed that the application is built for working in offline mode as well, once installed the user can scan Indian currency banknote of any denomination irrespective of the availability of the mobile network in the android device of the user.

The Mani app was launched following the batch of new Indian currency banknote in 7 different denominations was released by RBI after demonetization in 2016 which includes different intaglio printing, variable size & colour of the banknote, large numerical, etc across the denominations of banknotes, after which it was reported that the persons with visual disabilities have been facing issues in identifying the denominations.
