The word “mangrove” is derived from the Portuguese word “mangue,” which means “tree,” and the English word “grove.” Mangrove forests are sometimes referred to as “walking trees” due to their unique aerial root systems that make them appear to be standing on stilts. These forests are dominated by salt-tolerant trees and shrubs known as mangroves, which have evolved special adaptations to cope with the harsh environmental conditions of their habitat.

Some mangrove species, such as the red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), can grow up to 30 meters (100 feet) tall.
