Maharashtra’s New Education Policy

The Maharashtra government has recently mandated the teaching of Hindi as a third language in schools. This decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It affects both Marathi and English medium schools for students in classes 1 to 5. The change aims to enhance language skills and promote inclusivity.

Implementation of the New Curriculum Framework

The Maharashtra school education department issued a Government Resolution on April 16, 2025. This resolution outlines a phase-wise implementation of the NEP 2020 recommendations. The new curriculum incorporates a 5+3+3+4 structure of school education. This structure includes a foundational stage, preparatory stage, middle school, and secondary education.

Language Policy Changes

Currently, only Marathi and English are taught as mandatory languages in classes 1 to 4. Starting from the upcoming academic year, Hindi will be compulsory from Grade 1. This change aims to ensure that students are proficient in three languages by the end of primary education.

Focus on Local Context

The syllabus will be developed based on the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) guidelines. However, it will also incorporate Maharashtra’s local context in subjects like History, Geography, and languages. This approach aims to provide a balanced educational experience.

Core Pillars of Education

The new educational framework is built on five fundamental pillars – inclusiveness, equity, quality, affordability, and accountability. These pillars aim to create a more equitable education system. They ensure that all students have access to quality education regardless of their background. It also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that should be reached by 2030.

Broader Linguistic Policies

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions about linguistic policies in India. The NEP promotes the use of a common communicable language across the country. Maharashtra’s proactive steps reflect its commitment to both regional and national languages.
