Maharashtra launches Mission Shakti sports initiative

Film Actor Aamir Khan launched Mission Shakti, a Maharashtra government’s initiative to train athletes from tribal areas for international sports events such as Olympics. It will help Maharashtra government to hunt for talented athletes in remote areas of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.

At the launch event Aamir Khan felicitated a team of tribal mountaineers who had recently scaled Mount Everest as part of ‘Mission Shaurya’.

Mission Shakti

It aims to groom tribal student for an Olympic medal by 2024.

The mission is directed towards 6 sporting disciplines namely- archery, shooting, volleyball, swimming, weightlifting and gymnastics.

Implementation: For now the programme is being implemented in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts and will be extended to rest of State soon. State government has set aside funds at district level to construct required facilities and a stadium such as mega sports complex is planned at Ballarpur in Chandrapur with a focus on 6 sports areas.

Significance:

It will speed up state governments programme to spot Olympic talent in remote tribal regions of State.

Through Mission Shakti, international-quality facilities will be provided with a view to increase our medal tally in Olympics.

With help od mission youth from Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, will get a chance to bring laurels to India.
