Centre Approves 6.5 Lakh PMAY Houses for Maharashtra
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, recently expressed gratitude to the Central Government for approving an extensive housing initiative, which includes 6.5 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Fadnavis announced plans to add another 13 lakh houses, marking a step towards addressing housing shortages in the state.
Overview of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana aims to provide affordable housing to the urban and rural poor. Launched in April 2016, the scheme focuses on ensuring “Housing for All” by 2022. The initiative has been extended to March 2029 to accommodate increasing housing demands.
Currently, 26 lakh individuals have registered for the PMAY scheme. Out of these, 20 lakh individuals are expected to receive homes. This reflects an interest in the programme and its potential impact on housing accessibility.
Housing Targets for Maharashtra
For the 2024-25 fiscal year, Maharashtra was initially assigned a target of 6.37 lakh houses based on the Awaas+ 2018 survey. With the recent approval, the total target has increased to 19.66 lakh houses, which includes the newly sanctioned 13.29 lakh houses.
The PMAY-Gramin variant specifically targets rural households, aiming to provide permanent homes equipped with basic amenities. This initiative is crucial for improving living standards in rural areas.
Government Commitment
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan brought into light the government’s broader goal of constructing two crore permanent houses in villages and one crore in cities across India. The commitment to housing development is evident, with over six lakh houses already constructed in Maharashtra alone.
The expansion of the housing initiative is set to benefit rural families in Maharashtra. The government’s ongoing support and strategic planning will play a vital role in achieving housing goals in the state.
