Mahakumbh captivates academics from Harvard
The Mahakumbh Mela in Allahabad has not only attracted pilgrims from all over the country but also pulled in scholars and academics from Harvard University. These scholars are closely observing the mega event to study the complex dynamics of the mela. The study dubbed ‘Mapping India’s Kumbh Mela’, is underpinned by the desire to figure out just how tens of millions of Indians gather peacefully in one spot to celebrate this ancient rite of religious passage. The scholars are also studying the logistics involved in the creation of massive Temporary Township which is spanned over 1,940 hectares along the sandy banks of the converging rivers. This study is also expected to generate some very useful data related to public health, use of cellphone network at the mela etc.
