Maha Kumbh 2025 to Feature World’s Largest AI-Powered Headcount
The Maha Kumbh Mela in 2025 will be a monumental occasion at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and is expected to draw between 40 and 45 crore devotees. Attendees will gather at the sacred ‘Triveni Sangam’, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers converge. The Uttar Pradesh government aims to implement the world’s largest AI-powered headcount for this event.
AI Technology Implementation
Advanced technology will be used for accurate attendee counting and AI-powered cameras will monitor the crowd. Authorities will deploy 744 temporary CCTV cameras at 200 locations. Additionally, 1,107 permanent cameras will be set up across 268 spots in the city. There will also be 720 cameras in over 100 vehicle parking areas.
Real-Time Tracking
Divisional Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant emphasized the importance of AI. The system will enable real-time tracking of crowd density. It aims for an accuracy rate of about 95%. The AI will operate from 3 AM to 7 PM during bathing hours. Data updates will occur every minute, focusing on the ghats.
Preventing Duplicate Counts
The system will monitor how long individuals stay at the ghats, which helps avoid counting the same person multiple times. AI algorithms will also estimate crowd sizes on varying days. Expected attendance will range from 20 lakh to 10 crore people.
Tracking Methods
Three main tracking methods will be employed. The first is ‘Attribute-Based Search’, identifying people by physical traits. The second involves ‘RFID Wristbands’, which visitors will wear for movement tracking. The third is ‘Mobile App Tracking’, using GPS-enabled apps to monitor locations with user consent.
The Maha Kumbh Mela occurs every 12 years, will start on January 13, 2025, and conclude on February 26, 2025. Key bathing dates include January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
