Lu Ping, Chinese diplomat who oversaw Hong Kong handover passes away

Lu Ping, Chinese diplomat who oversaw Hong Kong’s transition from British to Chinese sovereignty in 1997 passed away in Beijing. He was 87.
He was the China’s Chief negotiator in the years before handover and was known for his hard-line stance for this transistion.
He notoriously had called Hong Kong’s last British Governor Chris Patten (1992–1997) a sinner for a thousand years for making the territory’s elections more democratic or his unilateral electoral reform proposals..
Lu also had helped in drafting Hong Kong’s mini constitution. He was appointed Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) in 1990 and retired in 1997, just few days after the handover.
He was born in Shanghai on 27 September 1927 and had graduated from St. John’s University, Shanghai in 1947.
