Love in 90s: First Feature Film Based on Tagin Community
Love in 90s, a new feature film directed by Tapen Natam, recently had its trailer released by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in New Delhi. The movie is significant as it is the first one to be based on the Tagin community of Arunachal Pradesh. The movie portrays the culture, lifestyle, and various elements of the tribal community as well as the northeastern state.
Who are the Tagins?
The Tagins are one of the major tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. They are proud and independent in character and rich in traditional culture. The Tagins belong to the larger designation of Abo Tani Clane (Abo – Father, Tani – Ancestor’s Name). Most Tagins are concentrated in Daporijo, upper Subansiri district, and some adjoining parts of West Siang, Mechuka, and Papum Pare.
Si-Donyi: The Most Important Festival of the Tagins
Donyi Poloism is the religion followed by most Tagins. The most important festival of the Tagins is Si-Donyi, which involves the veneration of the earth (si) and the sun (donyi). Celebrated from the 3rd to the 8th of January, it is considered auspicious for the well-being of the community and mankind as a whole, as well as for agriculture purposes. The fifth and sixth days of the festival are the main celebration days.
