Legacy and Contribution of Dr Kapila Vatsyayan to Indian Cultural Research
Dr Kapila Vatsyayan who was a Leading scholar of Indian classical dance, art, architecture and art history passed away on September 16, 2020 at the age of 92.
Who was Dr kapila Vatsyayan?
- She was born in Delhi. Ram Lal was her father and Satyawati Malik was her mother.
- She married to the Hindi Writer S.H. Vatsyayan ‘Ajneya’. However, later they got separated.
- She wrote many books including,
- The Square and the Circle of Indian Arts in 1997
- Bharata: The Natya Sastra in 1996 and
- Matralaksanam in 1988.
Her Career
- She had been a former Member of Parliament.
- She had served as Secretary to the Government in the Ministry of Education.
- As the secretary, she was responsible for the establishing many national institutions of higher education.
- She was also a founding Director of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.
- She has worked as former President of India International Centre (IIC).
Her Achievements
- She reveived the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship which is the highest honour conferred by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1970.
- She has also been conferred with the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship in 1955 which happens to be highest honour in the fine arts.
- In 2000, she received the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award.
- In 2011, she was bestowed upon with the Padma Vibhushan by the government of India.
