Lavender Festival

The enchanting Bhaderwah Valley in Jammu and Kashmir has become a hub of lavender cultivation, earning it the prestigious title of the lavender capital of India. In an exciting development, Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated the two-day “Lavender Festival” in the valley, celebrating the region’s success in promoting lavender cultivation and nurturing agri-startups. The festival, organized by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), is part of their ‘One Week One Lab Campaign’.

Remarkable Progress in Lavender Cultivation

The Lavender Festival exhibits the impressive advancements achieved in cultivating lavender and the beneficial influence it has had on the nearby community. Lavender cultivation has thrived in Bhaderwah due to its ideal conditions, including favorable land and climate. This region has witnessed the birth of India’s purple revolution, where lavender crops have transformed the lives of farmers and opened up new avenues for development.

Supporting Farmers Through the CSIR-aroma Mission

The CSIR-IIIM, through its CSIR-aroma Mission, has played a pivotal role in supporting farmers in Bhaderwah’s Doda district. The mission aims to increase the income of small and marginal farmers and foster the development of agriculture-based startups. As part of this initiative, the CSIR-IIIM has distributed over 30 lakh free lavender plants to farmers in various districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Installation of Distillation Units

In order to facilitate the processing of lavender, the CSIR-IIIM has set up 50 distillation units at various sites throughout Jammu and Kashmir. These units play a vital role in extracting essential oils and other valuable substances from lavender crops. The prosperous integration of lavender cultivation by small and marginalized maize farmers in the temperate areas of Jammu has resulted in the emergence of a new industry in the region.
