Launch of Spoofed Calls Prevention System in India
Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, launched the ‘International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System’. This initiative is part of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) efforts to enhance digital safety in India. The launch was attended by key officials, including the Minister of State for Communications, Dr Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar.
What are Spoofed Calls?
Spoofed calls occur when a caller manipulates their phone number to appear as if they are calling from a different number. In this case, international scammers are making calls that display Indian mobile numbers (+91-xxxxxxxxx). These calls seem to originate from within India, misleading recipients.
Nature of the Cyber Threat
Cyber criminals use spoofed calls for various malicious activities. Common scams include:
- Financial fraud
- Impersonation of government officials
- Creating panic among citizens
Other threats include fake digital arrests, drug-related scams, and impersonation as police officials. Such tactics are designed to exploit unsuspecting individuals.
Collaboration Between DoT and Telecom Service Providers
To combat spoofed calls, the DoT collaborated with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs). Together, they developed a system to identify and block these calls. This partnership aims to protect Indian telecom subscribers from these deceptive practices.
Operational Effectiveness
The new system became operational shortly after its launch. Initial results were promising. Within 24 hours, the system identified and blocked approximately 1.35 crore (13.5 million) spoofed calls. This represented about 90% of all incoming international calls showing Indian numbers.
Impact on Indian Telecom Subscribers
With the implementation of this systemn telecom subscribers can expect an important reduction in spoofed calls. The goal is to create a safer communication environment for all users. Subscribers should notice fewer calls from numbers that appear to be Indian but are actually international scams.
Importance of Cyber Safety
This initiative marks the growing need for cyber safety. As technology evolves, so do the tactics of cyber criminals. Awareness and preventive measures are crucial in protecting citizens from potential threats.
Future Steps
The DoT is committed to enhancing digital safety further. Continuous monitoring and improvement of the spoofed calls prevention system will be essential. The collaboration with TSPs will also play a vital role in adapting to new challenges in cyber security.
The launch of the International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System is an important step towards safeguarding Indian citizens from cyber threats. By blocking deceptive international calls, the DoT aims to encourage a secure digital landscape for all.
