Ladakh Ice Wall Climbing Competition

On February 26, 2022, the North-West Frontier Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) organised an ice wall climbing competition in Ladakh, for the first time.

  • More than 100 climbers took part in the competition.
  • It was attended by the lieutenant governor of Ladakh, Radha Krishna Mathur.
  • This event was organised by North-West Frontier Headquarters, ITBP, Leh, in association with the Ladakh Mountaineering Guide Association.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP)

ITBP is the primary border patrol organization of India, for its border with Tibet Autonomous Region. It is among the five Central Armed Police Forces of India. It was constituted on October 24, 1962, under the CRPF Act, in the aftermath of Sino-Indian War of 1962.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act, 1992

Parliament of India enacted the “Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force Act, 1992” in September 1996, to provide constitution and regulation of the ITBP, in order to ensure security of Indian border.

First head of ITBP

First head of the ITBP was designated Inspector General Balbir Singh. He was a police officer, who belonged to the Intelligence Bureau.

Battalions of ITBP

The ITBP was started with 4 battalions. It has undergone expansion to a force of 60 Battalions, since restructuring in 1978.

Mountain Force

The ITBP is a specialised mountain force. Currently, ITBP soldiers mainly cover an area of 3,488 kilometres, ranging from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh. They also cover high-altitude outposts on the Western, Middle, and Eastern sectors across Indo-China border. It is trained in disaster management, Civil Medical Camp, and nuclear, biological & chemical disasters. ITBP personnel have also been deployed abroad in UN peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Western Sahara, Haiti, Afghanistan, Sudan, Afghanistan, and other places. Two battalions of ITBP have also been deputed to National Disaster Response Force.
