Krishna River Faces Severe Drought Issues

The Krishna River is a vital water source for northern Karnataka. Recent reports indicate alarming drought conditions. The river has started drying up earlier than usual, impacting agriculture and drinking water supply in the region. The situation has prompted urgent appeals for water releases from neighbouring Maharashtra.

Importance of the Krishna River

The Krishna River is one of India’s longest rivers, spanning approximately 1,400 kilometres. It plays important role in supporting agriculture and ecosystems across western and southern India. The river’s basin is predominantly agricultural, with 75.86% of the area cultivated.

Drought Conditions

Drought has become a pressing issue, particularly in Kalyan Karnataka. The river’s drying up in April has devastated crops.  Although drinking water is supplied by the government, the agricultural crisis remains dire.

Government Responses

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has reached out to Maharashtra for water assistance. He requested the release of 2 tmcft from Koyana and 1 tmcft from Varana reservoirs. However, Maharashtra has yet to respond. Local leaders argue that more proactive measures are needed beyond mere correspondence.

Historical Water Agreements

Since 2004, a water-sharing agreement between Karnataka and Maharashtra has been in place. Under this agreement, Maharashtra would release water from its reservoirs in exchange for water from Karnataka. However, the implementation of this plan has faced delays and escalating costs.

Ecological Challenges

The Krishna River also faces ecological challenges. It is known for causing soil erosion during monsoon seasons. The river’s ecosystem is delicate, and any disruption can have far-reaching consequences for both agriculture and biodiversity.

Future Prospects

The future of the Krishna River and its basin is uncertain. Climate change and increasing temperatures are likely to exacerbate existing water scarcity issues. Sustainable management practices and cooperative efforts between states are essential for the river’s health and the communities that depend on it.
