Kosi Mechi Intra-State Link Project
The Kosi Mechi Intra-State Link Project is initiative aimed at improving irrigation and flood management in Bihar. Recently approved by the Cabinet, this project is part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). The project will utilise surplus water from the Kosi River to enhance irrigation in the Mahananda basin. With an estimated cost of Rs. 6,282.32 crore, it is expected to be completed by March 2029.
Project Objectives
The primary objective of the Kosi Mechi project is to divert excess water from the Kosi River to the Mahananda basin. This will be achieved by remodelling the existing Eastern Kosi Main Canal (EKMC) and extending it to the Mechi River. The project aims to provide irrigation to an additional 2,10,516 hectares of farmland in Bihar, primarily benefiting the districts of Araria, Purnea, Kishanganj, and Katihar.
Funding and Support
The project has received substantial financial backing from the central government. Out of the total estimated cost, Rs. 3,652.56 crore will be provided as central assistance to Bihar. This funding is crucial for the timely completion of the project and aims to alleviate water scarcity issues in the region.
Impact on Agriculture
Once completed, the project is expected to improve agricultural productivity. It will restore irrigation supply to 1.57 lakh hectares currently served by the EKMC. Additionally, it will facilitate the diversion of approximately 2,050 million cubic metres of surplus water during the monsoon season, enhancing water availability for farming.
Broader Context of PMKSY-AIBP
The Kosi Mechi project is part of the broader PMKSY-AIBP initiative launched in 2015-16. This initiative aims to expand irrigation coverage and promote sustainable water conservation practices across India. Since its inception, 63 projects have been completed, creating additional irrigation potential for over 26 lakh hectares.
