About Nirbhaya Scheme

The government of India had set up the “Nirbhaya Fund” in 2013, after 2012 Nirbhaya Gang rape case. The fund focuses on implementing the initiatives that are aimed at improving the security and safety of women across India. It is a non-lapsable corpus fund, in which government’s contribution was 1000 crores.  This fund is administered by “Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance”. However, Women and Child Development Ministry is the nodal agency to do expenditure from the Fund. Under this fund, Central government provides money to the states, which is spent on programs meant for ensuring women’s safety.
