Kerala Piravi Day

The Kerala Piravi Day is also called the Kerala Day. Every year the Kerala Piravi Day is celebrated on November 1. It is celebrated to mark the birth of the state of Kerala. The state was formed on November 1, 1956.

History

Before 1956, the state of Kerala was divided into four regions. They were Travancore, Malabar, South Canara (Kasaragod region) and Cochin.

Malabar region

The region of Malabar was ruled by Zamorin kingdom, Arakkal kingdom, Kingdom of Valluvanad. Later it was captured by Tipu Sultan. From him the British East India company ceded the Malabar region after the Anglo Mysore wars. It was first annexed to the Bombay Presidency. Later replaced to the Madras Presidency.

Kingdom of Cochin

The Cochin kingdom comprised of land that lies in the middle of current day Kerala. It was once ruled by the Zamorins. Later by 1500, the Portugal dominance increased in the region. During their rule, the Portuguese built a number of forts. One of the most important Portugal forts is Fort Manuel. After the Anglo-Dutch war in 1800, the British East India company captured the region.

Travancore – Cochin State

The Travancore – Cochin was a short-lived state. It existed between 1949 and 1956. It was formed by merging the kingdom of Travancore and Cochin. The capital of the state was Thiruvananthapuram. In Travancore and Cochin, the Mapilla muslims revolted against the British Raj and the Hindu zamindars. They demanded for political rights. Thus, after independence in 1949, a separate state of Travancore-Cochin was formed.

Aikya Kerala movement for Formation of Kerala

The Aikya Kerala means United Kerala. The movement rose in the region after independence. It gave a forward push to the reorganisation of the state of Kerala based on language.

After formation of Kerala

After the state of Kerala was formed, a communist led government came to power in 1957. The government was formed under the E.M.S. Namboodiripad. It was one of the earliest communist governments to come to power in India.

Coastal town of Mahe in the Kerala region

The coastal town of Mahe was under the French rule till 1950s. It was then integrated into the Union Territory of Puducherry.
