nPROUD Initiative

Recently, Kerala initiated the nPROUD (New Programme for Removal of Unused Drugs) to address the environmental and health hazards posed by expired and unused medicines. This pioneering government-led initiative aims to create a systematic approach to collect and dispose of these drugs safely. The programme will initially be piloted in Kozhikode and is expected to expand statewide based on its success.

What is nPROUD Initiative?

The nPROUD initiative was conceived due to the rising concerns over the improper disposal of drugs. Unused and expired medicines often end up in general waste. This practice leads to soil and water contamination, contributing to antimicrobial resistance. The Kerala Drugs Control Department aims to combat these issues through this innovative programme.

Pilot Phase and Implementation

The pilot phase will commence in Ulliyeri panchayat within Kozhikode Corporation. The programme will involve scheduled collection of unused medicines from homes. The public can also deposit expired drugs in designated blue collection boxes. Local self-government bodies will assist in the implementation, ensuring community involvement.

Collection and Disposal Mechanism

Under nPROUD, the collection process will be systematic. Residents will receive notifications for scheduled pickups. Pharmacies and clinics will also be required to deliver their expired stock to pre-assigned collection centres. Collected drugs will be transported to Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Ltd (KEIL) for scientific disposal.

Environmental and Health Impact

The initiative aims to mitigate environmental pollution and health risks associated with improper drug disposal. By ensuring that expired medicines are not discarded carelessly, nPROUD seeks to protect water sources and soil quality. The project adheres to the Biomedical Waste Management Act, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Future Plans for Expansion

Upon successful evaluation of the pilot project, nPROUD will be scaled up across the state. The Drugs Control Department plans to establish more permanent collection centres. The initiative is expected to raise public awareness about the importance of proper drug disposal.

Community Engagement

Community involvement is crucial for the success of nPROUD. The programme is supported by local bodies and members of the Green Brigade. Awareness campaigns will be conducted to educate the public about the environmental impacts of improper drug disposal.
