Katyuri Dynasty

Katyuri Dynasty is medieval line of kings who ruled over the present day Uttarakhand region between 8th and 12th century CE. Their state was known as ‘Kurmanchal’, meaning ‘the land of the Kurma (an avatar of Lord Vishnu)’. It was founded by Vashudev Katyuri who is noted for his Basdeo stone temple. Between 700 and 800 CE, the Dynasty established many smaller administrative units for convenience but these later fell under the rule of ‘Garhpatis’ who built individuals forts called ‘Garh’.
