Karnataka Research Development and Innovation Policy

The Karnataka Research Development and Innovation Policy was released during the inaugural session of the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS 22).

What are the objectives of the policy?

  • The Karnataka Research Development and Innovation Policy aims ensure cooperation between industry and science as well as innovative startups.
  • It seeks to ease collaboration between the skilled workforce, grassroots innovators, researching enterprises, and university-based cutting-edge research institutes.
  • The policy proposes the setting up of the Karnataka State Research Foundation to devise and implement the strategies for the implementation of the policy’s objectives.
  • It directs the government entities to earmark budget for research and innovation activities.
  • Its focus areas include:
  1. Strengthening governance and funding of research and innovation system and policies
  2. Research and innovation to promote the regional ecosystem
  3. Research, development, and innovation supporting entrepreneurship and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
  • The policy also seeks to support undergraduate and postgraduate students, doctoral scholars and early stage researchers to undertake high-quality research and acquire the necessary skills.
  • Under this policy, higher education institutes will be given open access to publicly funded research results, facilities, and research data.
  • It also seeks to create numerous science and technology parks.
  • The policy proposes the launch of the Karnataka Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship (K-TIE) – an incubation programme that will strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem outside Bengaluru. This programme will provide incentives to establish companies outside the capital city.

Bengaluru Tech Summit

The Bengaluru Tech Summit is Asia’s largest technology summit. It is India’s flagship technology event that promotes international engagements and discussions across various domains, including fintech, biotechnology, education technology, semiconductors and others.

During the 2022 edition, more than 20 products were launched and at least 9 MoU were signed. For the first time, startups from 16 Indian states took part in the summit. Over 350 experts of international recognition talked about the recent technological advancements during the conference that was held under the theme “Tech4NextGen”.
