Karnataka Caste Census
The Karnataka caste census report was submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on February 29, 2024. This comprehensive survey aimed to gather socio-economic data on various caste groups within the state. The report is based on data from the 2015 socio-educational survey, which was studied using 54 indicators. The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) checked the digital data and confirmed that the 2015 survey data matches with the 2011 Census.
Survey Details
The Karnataka caste census, commissioned in 2015, aimed to gather detailed demographic data. The survey encompassed approximately 13.8 million households, representing nearly 94.17% of the state’s population. It was conducted at a cost of ₹192.79 crore with the assistance of 160,000 officials, including 79 IAS officers. The data collected included 54 indicators such as caste, income, education, and occupation.
Content of the Report
The report is divided into two volumes. The first volume includes findings from the 2015 survey, while the second contains social and economic indicators of non-Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. It also provides taluk-wise data and additional insights from secondary reports. The survey aims to inform policy decisions regarding backward class development.
Controversies and Credibility Issues
The credibility of the survey has been questioned, particularly following leaks suggesting reduction in the population percentages of dominant castes, such as Lingayats and Vokkaligas. Critics have alleged that the survey lacks scientific validity and is politically motivated. They argue that it aims to create social divisions for electoral gain.
Future Implications
The outcomes of the caste census are expected to influence political strategies and social policies in Karnataka. The cabinet’s upcoming discussions will determine how the findings will shape future governance. The survey’s findings may also affect the allocation of resources and benefits to various caste groups.
