Kannadippaya gets GI Tag

Kannadippaya, a traditional handicraft from Kerala, has recently been awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition ensures market protection and elevates the craft to a global platform. The GI tag was granted to two artisan groups in Idukki district, marking kannadippaya as the first tribal handicraft from Kerala to receive this honour.

What is Kannadippaya?

Kannadippaya translates to mirror mat. It is a handwoven product made from the soft inner layers of reed bamboo. The unique reflective pattern of the mat distinguishes it from other handicrafts. It provides warmth during winter and a cooling effect in summer. This eco-friendly mat aligns with global sustainability trends.

Craftsmanship and Materials

The primary artisans of kannadippaya are from the Oorali, Mannan, Muthuva, Malayan, Kadar, Ulladan, Malayarayan, and Hill Pulaya communities. The best quality mats are crafted from a specific bamboo species known as Teinostachyum wightii. Other bamboo varieties are also used, contributing to the mat’s durability and appeal.

Cultural Significance

Historical records indicate that kannadippaya was once presented to kings as a mark of honour by tribal communities. The craft is not just a product but a symbol of cultural heritage. Its preservation is vital for sustaining the livelihoods and traditions of indigenous tribes in Kerala.

About Geographical Indication (GI) Tags

A GI tag is an intellectual property label that certifies a product’s origin and quality based on its geographical source. In India, the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 governs GI tags. The first GI tag in India was awarded to Darjeeling Tea in 2004-05.

Top States for GI Tags

Uttar Pradesh leads in the number of GI-tagged products, followed by Tamil Nadu. The GI tag system encourages the preservation of traditional crafts and supports local economies.

Future Prospects

The GI tag will enhance the visibility of kannadippaya, attracting both national and international interest. As eco-friendly products gain popularity, kannadippaya has the potential to tap into global markets. Reviving interest among younger generations is crucial for sustaining this traditional craft.
