Kandla Port renamed as Deendayal Port
The Union Ministry of Shipping has renamed Kandla Port Trust as Deendayal Port Trust, by exercising powers conferred on it under Indian Ports Act, 1908.
The name was changed as part of yearlong centenary celebrations of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, who had stood for uplift of poor and weaker sections of society.
Background
Earlier in 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi while laying foundation stone for Rs.933 crore projects at Kandla Port had suggested that it should be named after Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay, who stood for uplift of all sections of the society. Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay was an Indian politician and was one ofmost important leaders of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of present day Bharatiya Janata Party.
