Kabul Terror Attack

The UN recently condemned the terror attack on the Kabul Gurudwara in Afghanistan. Several countries, including India, had also condemned the attack.

The Attack

The attack happened on March 25th on the Gurudwara Har Rai Sahib Shrine in Kabul in Afghanistan. The shootings and suicide bombing led to the death of 25 worshippers and the wounding of several others. An Indian citizen was among the casualties.

Sikhism in Afghanistan

Though Afghanistan is an Islamic nation, it has a minority population of 850 to 900 Sikh citizens. Sikhism in Afghanistan can be traced back to the arrival of the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev during one of his 4 journeys (called udaasis). The gurudwaras in Afghanistan are located in Kabul, Ghazni and Jalalabad.

ISIL

The Kabul Gurudwara attack was claimed by the ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province). It is a militant Islamist group that operates in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Tajikistan and Pakistan. The terrorist group has targeted the Sikh community before this.
