K K Venugopal appointed as Attorney General of India

On June 30, 2020, K K Venugopal was re-appointed as Attorney General of India. He has been appointed for a year.

K K Venugopal, a senior advocate was re-appointed as attorney General of India. Also, Tushar Mehta was re-appointed as the Solicitor General for a period of three year. Mr Chetan Sharma, a senior lawyer has been appointed as the Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court

The Appointments Committee re-appointed the existing five Additional Solicitor General for another three years in the Supreme Court.

About K K Venugopal

K K Venugopal is an Indian Constitutional Lawyer. He is a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India.

He was appointed as the constitutional advisor by the Royal Government of Bhutan to draft constitution of Bhutan. In 2017, he was appointed as Attorney General of India.

He was conferred with Padma Vibhushan in 2015. In 2002, he was awarded with Padma Bhushan.

Venugopal is one of the main advocates for Judicial reforms. He is against the creation of regional benches of Supreme Court of India.

Attorney General of India

He is the chief legal advisor of Indian Government. He is appointed by the President of India under Article 76.

An attorney general should be a person qualified to be appointed as judge of Supreme Court of India. He appears in all cases on behalf of GoI.

The Constitution does not provide a fixed tenure to the Attorney General of India. He holds office during the pleasure of the president. He can be removed by the president any time.

Solicitor General of India

He is a subordinate to the Attorney General of India. He is the second law officer of the country. They advise and appear on behalf of GoI in terms of Law Officers Rules, 1972.
