Justice Swatanter Kumar is new NGT chief

imageJustice Swatanter Kumar has become the first Supreme Court judge to  be the chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which was, till now, functioning without a full-time chairperson. He will decide on cases pertaining to environmental protection, and conservation of forests and natural resources.

What is NGT?

The National Green Tribunal was set up in 2010 in compliance with the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 to provide effective and speedy disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources including enforcement of any legal right relating to environment and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. It is a specialized body equipped with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes involving multi-disciplinary issues.
