Justice J S Khehar is the next CJI

Jagdish Singh Khehar, has been appointed as the 44th Chief Justice of India. He will be the first Chief Justice from the Sikh community to become the CJI. He will take the oath of office on January 4 and will hold the tenure for over seven months until August 2017.

Justice Khehar led the constitution bench in the Supreme Court which struck down the NJAC Act for the appointment of judges. He also headed a bench which struck down the imposition of President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh. He was a part of the bench that delivered a significant verdict making the principle of ‘equal pay for equal work’ applicable to daily wagers, casual and contractual employees.
