Justice Bobde recommended as next CJI
Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has recommended Justice SA Bobde as his successor. CJI Gogoi will demit his office on November 17, 2019. He was sworn in as the 46th CJI on October 3, 2018.
According to the Memorandum of Procedure, the appointment to the office of Chief Justice of India should be of the senior most judge of the Supreme Court. The CJI vacating the office recommends the name to the law minister and the minister puts it before the PM who advises the president on the matter.
Justice Bobde
Sharad Arvind Bobde is the current Judge of Supreme Court(SC) of India and a former Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. He is due to retire on 23 April 2021. He comes from a Nagpur-based lawyer family. His grandfather was a lawyer and his father Arvind Bobde was an advocate in Maharashtra. Bobde elder brother late Vinod Arvind Bobde was a constitutional expert and was a senior Supreme Court Lawyer
Notable Judgements of Justice Bobde
- Aadhar-Along with Justice Chelameswar and Chokkalingam Nagappan he ratified an earlier order of SC. The judgement clarified that no Indian citizen without an Aadhaar card can be deprived of basic services and government subsidies
- Religious-The ban by the Karnataka Government of a book by Mate Mahadevi on the ground it outraged religious feelings of the followers of Lord Basavanna. The judgement was pronounced by a 2-judge bench of Supreme Court that comprised of Justice Nageswara Rao and Justice Bobde
- Environment-The sales of fire crackers were suspended due to extreme pollution based on the judgement pronounced by a 3-judge bench that comprised of Justice TS Thakur, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Bobde
