June 26: International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking
Every year, the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed by the United Nations. It is being observed since 1989.

The date June 26 has been chosen to observe the day to commemorate Lin Zexu’s dismantling of Opium trade in Guangdong. The resolution for the observance was instituted in 1987.

Significance
According to the World Drug Report of the United Nations, the illegal drug value in the world amount to 322 billion USD per year. The World Drug Report also says that around 269 million people used drugs in 2018 and this is 30% more as compared to 2009.
As the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is celebrated as an expression of determination of United Nations to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve a drug free world. Therefore, it is important to celebrate the day to spread its messages that will create awareness all over the world against drug abuse.
