June 25: Day of the Seafarer
Every year, on June 25, the Day of Seafarer is celebrated by the International Maritime Organization, United Nations. It is being celebrated since 2011.
Highlights
According to IMO, almost 90% of the world goods are traded through the seas. This is possible only because of the seafarers.
The day highlights the dangers faced by the seafarers at sea such as piracy, sea level, etc. It also discusses their issues such as sailor rights at foreign ports.

Significance of the theme
The theme aims to increase awareness of the work of the sea farers during the current COVID-19 pandemic and also thank them for their contribution.
Background
The Day of Seafarer was designated by the International Maritime Organization in 2010. The day was established through the resolution adopted at the Diplomatic Conference in Manila.
The day has been included in the list of observances of the United Nations, meaning, it is officially marked by the UN.
