World Day against Trafficking in Persons is being observed on 30th July, 2021.
Highlights
- Inter-Agency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons (ICAT) and Council of Europe Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA) together has called upon the various stakeholders to include the point of view of all the survivors and victims in all the anti-trafficking activities.
- The Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings has always put the protection of the victims and their rights at the centre of all anti-trafficking action.
- Ensuring that the human rights of victims of human trafficking are at the forefront of the fight against human trafficking is central to all aspects of GRETA’s work.
- GRETA emphasizes that providing timely and effective assistance to victims of trafficking is essential to encourage them to get rid of traffickers and ensure their recovery and integration into society.
- GRETA emphasizes that victims of human trafficking should have the opportunity to participate in criminal proceedings against human traffickers (if they wish) and receive compensation.
- Consultation with victims and survivors of human trafficking should be conducted so that their needs are met.
Conclusion
Even in the 21st century, the threat of human trafficking has not disappeared. Thousands of people around the world have been trafficked for sex trafficking, slavery and forced labour.
According to the National Criminal Records Bureau (NCRB) of India, human trafficking is a group of crimes involving the trafficking of men, women and children for the purpose of sexual exploitation or economic gain or other exploitation of trafficked persons.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the 2010 Report on Human Trafficking indicated that 90% of trafficked persons belong to the most vulnerable groups.
According to the UNODC, sexual exploitation is the most common form of human trafficking. The Office of Drugs and Crime stated that learning from victims’ experiences and their suggestions will lead to a more victim-centric approach to combat human trafficking.
