July 10: National Fish Farmers Day

Every year India celebrates National Fish Farmers Day in July 10 since 2001. The initiative was first taken by Mumbai’s Central Institute of Fisheries Education.

Significance

As of December 2019, India is the second largest producer of fish in the world. Therefore, it is important for India to boost its fish farmers and celebrate fish production in India. The Government of India has launched several measures to help fish farmers in the country. One such scheme is Pradhan Mantri Sampada Yojana.

Pradhan Mantri Sampada Yojana

The scheme was launched in May 2020 with an investment of Rs 20,050 crores. The scheme is to create 5.5 million jobs in the next five years. The scheme has set a target of 7 million tonnes of fish production in a year.

Why July 10?

July 10 was chosen to celebrate National Fish Farmers Day as it was on this day, the first success of induced fish breeding was achieved.
