Joy Bangla

The High Court of Bangladesh has ordered the government to use ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. The slogan has its origins in the 1971 Liberation War.

Origin

The slogan ‘Joy Bangla’ was taken from a poem, ‘Purna Abhinandan’, written in 1922 by Kazi Nazrul Islam. It was also the war cry used by Mukti Bahini, the guerrilla force that fought for the liberation of Bangladesh. It was also famously used during the 7^th March Speech of Mujibur Rahman in 1971.

High Court Ruling

The Bangladesh High Court ordered its government to use ‘Joy Bangla’ as the national slogan. Individuals in constitutional posts and officials of the state are to conclude their speeches with this slogan on appropriate occasions. Teachers and students are also to use it after assemblies.

India’s Motto

The national motto of India is ‘Satyameva Jayate’- meaning ‘truth alone triumphs’. It is from a mantra from an ancient scripture called Mundaka Upanishad. It was adopted as the national motto on January 26^th of 1950. It is inscribed in the national emblem as well.
