Jorge Sampaio, Helena Ndume awarded with inaugural Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize

Jorge Sampaio and Helena Ndume have been awarded with the inaugural Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize.
The award was bestowed upon them as part of the annual commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day (observed every year on 18 July).
Jorge Sampaio: He was conferred with this award for his contribution and struggle for the restoration of democracy in Portugal.
He is the former president of Portugal and was in office for one decade from 1996 to 2006. He also had served as the mayor of Lisbon from 1989 to 1995.
Helena Ndume: She is a female ophthalmologist from Namibia. She was bestowed with this award for her contribution in treating eye-related illnesses and blindness of people in Namibia and throughout the developing world.

About Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Prize

• Established in June 2014 by the UN General Assembly (UNGA). It was established to pay homage to former South African President Nelson Mandela for his extraordinary life and legacy of reconciliation, social transformation and political transition.
• Bestowed upon persons in recognition of their achievements especially who have dedicated their life for the service of humanity and in the promotion of community development and social cohesion.
