Jharkhand Incorporates Transgender Community into Universal Pension Scheme

In a pioneering stride towards social inclusion, the Jharkhand government has extended the scope of its universal pension scheme to encompass transgender individuals. Under the newly implemented Mukhyamantri Rajya Samajik Suraksha Pension Yojana, eligible transgender beneficiaries are entitled to a monthly financial aid. This transformative initiative not only offers financial assistance but also emphasizes integration and social security for the transgender community.

Eligibility and Integration

To be eligible for this groundbreaking pension scheme, transgender individuals must fulfill specific criteria. They need to be 18 years or older, possess valid voter ID cards, and obtain a certification from the deputy commissioner’s office. This framework ensures that the support reaches those who genuinely need it while maintaining accountability.

Addressing Discrimination

One critical aspect of the Jharkhand government’s initiative is the commitment to combat discrimination. To create more inclusive healthcare facilities, the government has unveiled plans to construct separate restrooms for transgender individuals within hospitals. This move aims to provide a safe and comfortable environment, furthering the cause of equality and dignity.

Categorization and Benefits

Transgender individuals who do not fall under any caste reservation category will receive benefits under the backward category-2. This categorization ensures that they receive the support they deserve, recognizing their unique challenges and needs.

Other Cabinet Decisions

Aside from this groundbreaking move, the cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, made several other significant decisions during its meeting. Notably, they doubled the compensation amount for security personnel injured during duty, increasing it to Rs 7.5 lakh. In cases involving Maoist violence, the compensation is further doubled, underlining the government’s commitment to safeguarding those who serve the public interest.
