Jellyfish bloom

Jellyfish bloom is a phenomenon involving increased population of jellyfishes. It may occur due to changes in ocean and wind patterns, ecosystem shifts and jellyfish behaviours. It may affect ecological community composition and structure by reducing the availability of prey for other predators. Recently, the phenomenon was sighted in estuaries in Northern Malabar in Kerala. Occurring between November and March, the phenomenon’s scale is increasing rapidly over the recent years.
