Jay Shah Set to Become ICC Chairman

Jay Shah, who is currently the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is getting ready to take over as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This change is expected to happen in November after discussions about Shah’s plans to step into this role.

Support from Key Cricket Boards

Shah has gained the backing of important cricket boards, especially those from England and Australia. This support is crucial because, to be elected as chairman, a candidate needs a simple majority of nine votes out of the 16 ICC voting members. This is a change from the past, where a two-thirds majority was required

Historical Context of Indian Leadership in ICC

Shah’s upcoming election will make him the third Indian to lead the ICC, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, and N Srinivasan. This highlights the increasing influence that India has in the world of cricket.

The Election Process

According to ICC rules, a candidate needs to secure at least 51% of the votes to be elected as chairman. Shah is expected to easily win the position because of the positive support he has from many of the voting members. Jay Shah still has one year left in his role as the BCCI secretary before he must enter a mandatory cooling-off period. According to the BCCI’s constitution, office bearers can serve for a maximum of six years before they have to take a three-year break.

Significance of Shah’s Candidacy

Shah’s rise to ICC chairman is a significant moment for Indian cricket. It shows how dominant the BCCI has become in the decision-making processes of the ICC. Shah also holds an influential position as the chairperson of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, further strengthening his impact on the sport. Once he officially takes over, Jay Shah will become the youngest person ever to serve as the ICC chairman. This marks the beginning of a new era of leadership in international cricket, with Shah representing the next generation of cricket leaders.
