Jammu & Kashmir: Jhiri Mela

Famous Jhiri Mela commenced near village Kalyanpur in the Kanhachak area in Jammu on occasion of Gurupurab, the birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
The fair is held to commemorate the martyrdom of the Baba Jitto, who fought against exploitation of the feudal Lord or Jagirdar Bir Singh and died fighting for the rights of the peasants.
He was a contemporary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.
