Jammu and Kashmir launches New Food Processing Project
The Jammu and Kashmir government recently launched a food processing project of Rs 879.75 crores. The main objective of the project is to revolutionize the food processing sector. What will the project do? It will increase farmer income, reduce losses incurred during harvest, improve the quality of food products, and ultimately make the food products competitive in the world market. In the next five years, the project will build storage infrastructures, food packaging infrastructures, and food processing infrastructures in the region. Also, the project will increase market infrastructure, branding, and transportation & Logistics facilities.
What is the Project Plan?
- The project will increase the competitiveness of 7 products.
- Develop the food processing sector in 17 districts
- Generate 7,030 jobs
- Establish 34 enterprises and they will generate an income of Rs 1,436 crores
Seven Products
The following seven products will be focused and their competitiveness will be increased
- Milk in Pulwama and Jammu
- Walnuts in Kishtwar and Kupwara
- Basmati in RS Pura
- Organic mushrooms and vegetables in districts of Doda, Samba, Budgam
- Meat and Poultry in Kathua and Srinagar
- Trout in Ganderbal and Ananthnag
- Cherry in Baramulla and Ganderbal
Background
The project was recommended by the Level Apex Committee of the J&K Union Territory. The committee was formed under Dr. Angamuthu to frame a suitable Agricultural Policy for the region. The policy shall aim to increase the agricultural exports of the UT from 190 crores to 3000 crores.
Need for the project
Farmers in the region are facing 15% to 20% harvest losses and 20% of wastage especially in fruits. And the reason for these losses is the lack of processing facilities and packaging facilities. And the project is to cover these lackings.
