ISRO, DRDO signs MoUs to provide technologies for Human Space Mission

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to provide technologies for development of human centric systems for Human Space Mission to demonstrate its human space flight capabilities.

ISRO aims to demonstrate country’s human spaceflight capability before 75th anniversary of India’s independence in 2022.

Key Highlights of MoU

The set of MoUs were signed between a delegation of ISRO scientists with various DRDO labs to provide technologies for human centric systems and technologies specific to Human Space Mission. The MoUs were signed by Directors of-

  • Aerial Delivery Research & Development Establishment (ADRDE)
  • Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL)
  • Defence Bio-Engineering & Electro Medical Laboratory (DEBEL)
  • Defence Laboratory (DL) Jodhpur
  • Centre for Fire, Explosive & Environment Safety (CFEES)
  • Defence Institute of Physiology & Allied Sciences (DIPAS)
  • Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS)

As per MoU, technological capabilities existing in DRDO labs for various defence applications will be customised to meet requirements of ISRO’s human space mission.

To meet the stringent timelines, DRDO has already initiated customisation of required technologies and all necessary support to ISRO for the human space flight.

Certain critical technologies that would be provided by DRDO to ISRO includes-

  • space food and space crew health monitoring and emergency survival kit
  • parachutes for safe recovery of crew module
  • radiation measurement and protection
